After firing Patrick Ewing earlier this week, the Georgetown Hoyas reportedly have set their sights on a coach that hails from the Big Ten Conference.
Ewing was let go by his alma mater after going 75-109 in six seasons, including faring 7-25 (2-18 in Big East Conference play) in 2022. The Hoyas made just one NCAA Tournament appearance during Ewing’s tenure in 2020-21. They did not receive an at-large bid but automatically qualified for The Big Dance after winning that year’s Big East Conference tournament.
Once college basketball royalty, the Hoyas are looking at a Big Ten coach to potentially succeed Ewing. On Saturday, Stadium college hoops insider Jeff Goodman reported that Penn State’s Micah Shewsberry has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the head coaching vacancy at Georgetown.
Goodman also reported that Iona’s Rick Pitnio is not currently under consideration for the job, but reported earlier that the Hoyas would make a run at Providence’s Ed Cooley.
In his second season as Penn State’s head coach, Shrewsberry has the Nittany Lions on the cusp of an NCAA Tournament berth, as his team has reached the Big Ten Conference tournament semi-finals. We’ll have to see if Shrewsberry elects to leave for greener pastures after postseason play, but this is the second time his name has surfaced as a candidate for an opening vacancy already.
