On Monday, former Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey made headlines when she refused to comment on the Brittney Griner situation even though the WNBA star had played for her for four years. Afterward, some former Bears basketball players spoke up.
While other women’s basketball coaches have shared their thoughts and feelings about Griner’s imprisonment in Russia, Kim Mulkey, who was Griner’s head coach at Baylor where they won a national championship together in 2012, has been noticeably quiet. When a reporter asked her for any thoughts on the Griner situation, saying “I don’t think I’ve seen anything from you on that,” the current LSU women’s basketball coach bluntly responded, “and you won’t.”
Baylor’s current head coach, Nikki Collen, had some supportive comments about Griner, but plenty of people around the basketball world noticed Mulkey’s lack of compassion, including some former Baylor players.
Queen Egbo played under Mulkey for three seasons before the coach left for LSU after the 2021 season. The 2022 WNBA first-round pick took to Twitter to blast her former coach over her comments or lack thereof.
“A player that built Baylor, 2 [Final Fours], & a 40-0 record. Yet her former coach refuses to say anything or simply just show any kind of support,” Egbo tweeted. “Keep that in mind when you’re choosing schools.”
Meanwhile, Chloe Jackson, who played for Mulkey in 2018-19, also added her two cents.
“And I will say it again. SILENCE SPEAKS VOLUMES, smh,” she tweeted.
Griner is currently in a Russian prison after being found guilty of drug charges. Many political experts have said that Griner is a pawn in a strategy by Russia to get some of their citizens in U.S. prisons released and negotiations over a prisoner swap are currently underway.
