As if it wasn’t already evident when he chose to return to the school after discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers, UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley will remain with the program for years to come.
Monday, UConn and Hurley put pen to paper, agreeing on a new contract that will keep the coach of the back-to-back national champions at the helm until at least the 2030 season.
The school announced the news Monday in a release and also specified that it’s not an extension for Hurley but a new contract altogether.
The six-year deal will pay the coach $50 million over the contract’s life, with additional performance-based incentives. Hurley will receive an annual $1 million retention bonus. Some incentives can be seen below via Joe Arruda of the Hartford Courant.
“Dan Hurley is the best men’s basketball coach in the nation and we are delighted that he will continue to call UConn home,” UConn president Radenka Maric said in the release. “In addition to the exceptional program he has built over a period of years and the extraordinary back-to-back NCAA championships he and his teams won, Coach Hurley serves as a critical mentor to our student-athletes, pushing them to achieve both on the court and in the classroom, helping to lay the groundwork for their success in life long after they have left UConn. We are grateful both for his championship culture and for his leadership at our university and in our state,” Maric added.
Hurley has gone 141-58 in his six seasons at UConn and will look to join John Wooden as the second coach in NCAA history to win the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons.
