For the first time in almost 20 years, the NCAA Tournament has a back-to-back champion.
The UConn Huskies cruised to their second straight title Monday night, taking down Zach Edey and the Purdue Boilermakers by a score of 75-60.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley joined Kansas Jayhawks head coach as the only active college basketball coach with more than one National Championship with the victory. As a result, Hurley’s name was almost immediately tossed around as a possible replacement for John Calipari, who will reportedly be leaving the Kentucky Wildcats for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Speaking to the media shortly after Monday night’s win, Hurley reiterated that UConn fans have nothing to worry about, he’s focused on building a dynasty in Storrs.
“You’re thinking in your brain, as I’m looking at the locker room, about the chance to do it three times, like a dynasty in modern times. I mean, that’s what I’m thinking about,” Hurley said, via ESPN.
He also said that he doesn’t think his wife, Andrea, a New Jersey native like Hurley, would like to move again.
“I mean, we just went to Rhode Island [where Hurley coached from 2012-18], which I had to drag her to, and then to Connecticut. I got her closer. And now further? I can’t afford a divorce right now, too. I just started making money.”
Kentucky will almost certainly call Hurley and make him say no, likely leading to another raise from UConn, but it seems clear that the 51-year-old head coach has no plans to step away from the Huskies anytime soon.
