Good news for former boxing champ Mike Tyson. He will not be charged for beating up a fan on an airplane recently. The announcement was made Tuesday by San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, who said the fan’s actions toward Tyson are the main reason no charges will be brought.
“We have reviewed the police reports of the San Francisco Police Department and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and have viewed the various videos collected by law enforcement from others on the airplane,” Wagstaffe said in a statement, via CBS Bay Area. “Our decision is that we will not file any charges against Mr. Tyson based on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These include the conduct of the victim leading up to the incident, the interaction between Mr. Tyson and the victim, as well as the requests of both the victim and Mr. Tyson that no charges be filed in this case.”
The fan involved in the case, Melvin Townsend III, didn’t press charges but did hire a lawyer, which could indicate that he may be filing a civil suit against Tyson in the near future.
The incident, which was captured on video, showed Townsend being beaten up by Tyson after the boxer asked him to leave him alone.
