Former Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis was a prime candidate to find a new job this offseason. It turns out that Lewis doesn’t have to wait very long for that to come to fruition. News emerged on Tuesday that San Diego State plans to hire the former Wisconsin Badgers star as their next head coach.
ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel reported the news of Lewis’ imminent hire at SDSU.
“San Diego State has targeted Colorado OC Sean Lewis as the school’s next coach, with a deal expected to come together soon,” Thamel said. “Lewis was a successful head coach at Kent State, where he led the school to its first-ever bowl win and had consistently high-end offenses.”
Thamel reported the news on X, the popular website formerly known as Twitter.
Lewis is a strong hire for San Diego State, assuming both sides come to terms. The Aztecs recently moved on from Brady Hoke, who held the job for the second time in his career from 2020-23. The program went 27-20 under Hoke with a 18-12 record in the Mountain West Conference. They went 12-2 in 2021 and clinched a berth in the MWC Championship Game that season. They then went on to win the Frisco Bowl over UTSA.
But even after that season, Hoke’s services were apparently no longer needed. We’ll see how Lewis transitions over back to head coaching. It might be worth noting that several offensive commits from Colorado have de-committed in droves recently.
