The Seattle Seahawks sprang to sign a quarterback going into the weekend. On Friday, it was announced that the Seahawks signed veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad.
Rypien, who previously played for the Los Angeles Rams this season, joins another NFC West squad.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the news.
“Staying in the NFC West: Seahawks signed quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad Friday,” Schefter posted. The prominent insider made the post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
Schefter notes that Rypien’s signing means he joins a quarterback room featuring Drew Lock and starting quarterback Geno Smith.
Rypien entered the league in 2019 with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos signed Rypien to their practice squad after the former Boise State quarterback went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Rams are his third team since 2019.
In college, Rypien was a standout at Boise State. He won the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year award in 2015 and was later named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2018. He was named a three-time First-Team ALl-MWC selection in 2015, 2016, and 2018. Rypien made the Second Team in 2017.
While it’s probably unlikely that Rypien would see the field, you just never know in the NFL. A swell of injuries is, unfortunately, only a few tackles away. So, the Seahawks signing him for depth reasons makes all the sense in the world.
