The New York Jets made a crowd-pleasing announcement on Monday. New York plans to wear a classic uniform this coming season, a blast from the past (though, not so distant in some cases).
The Jets revealed their newest throwback uniform set on Monday with a post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.
“One night only, the Classic is back,” the Jets announced.
Jets owner Woody Johnson also announced the return of the jersey on X with a post as well.
The uniforms are a great look. They have always been one of the team’s signature looks. They debuted with this look when they were an AFL franchise led by Joe “Willy” Namath. They embraced this uniform until the late 1970s when the team changed. Funnily enough, the Jets’ current uniform kit is the same one the team wore in the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1998, the Jets reverted to this look with a slight twist: A green facemask replaced the classic grey one that every team used to wear. They wore this set until a change in the 2020s that’s already been reversed.
The reception to the announcement was quite positive. The Jets’ current set is pretty nice, and so is this one. It’s a good problem to have.
New York will wear the uniforms during Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
