New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman declared earlier this season that it will be a very active trade deadline for the organization as they look to cut their deficit in the AL East. And on Friday, Cashman made his first big move of the season so far, bringing in a former All-Star at a position of need.

The Yankees have been rumored to be in the market for a third baseman, which makes sense given the clear struggles of just about everyone within the Yankees organization who has attempted to play third base this season. Notably, Oswaldo Peraza and Jorbit Vivas are both hitting under the Mendoza line at the position.

This led the Yankees to make a deal with the Colorado Rockies for former All-Star third baseman Ryan McMahon, according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand. The Rockies will reportedly receive two pitching prospects, Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz, in return for McMahon in the move.

Dealing McMahon makes all the sense in the world for the Rockies, who have been as bad as any team in baseball this season and are looking to part ways with anyone who isn’t in the organization’s long-term plans.

For the Yankees, the move fills a need. But there are some obvious concerns given McMahon’s struggles this season. Despite playing in the most hitter friendly in all of baseball in Colorado at Coors Field, McMahon hasn’t exactly impressed, hitting just .217 on the season with a .314 on-base percentage.

Clearly, the Yankees are hoping that a change of scenery could potentially bring out a return to form for McMahon, who has in previous years been one of the most sought-after trade options in baseball despite the Rockies not actually moving him in past years.

Naturally, baseball fans had plenty to say about the move, with most actually seeing the trade as an intriguing, high-upside and low downside move for the Yankees given their struggles at the third base position.
