While the American League and National League Championship Series get underway, the Miami Marlins made headlines away from the MLB Postseason. Early Monday morning, the Marlins announced a mutual parting of ways between them and their general manager.
Kim Ng, the first woman to serve as a GM in MLB history, declined her mutual option with the team. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported the news on Monday morning, and the Marlins later confirmed the news in a release.
“The Miami Marlins announce today that Kim Ng will not be returning as the club’s General Manager,” the Marlins said in the release via Mark Feinsand. “Although the club exercised its team option for her to return for the 2024 season, Kim has declined her mutual option,” they said.
The Marlins wished Ng well on her way out from the team. “We thank Kim for her contributions during her time with our organization and wish her and her family well.”
Ng has yet to comment publicly on the move.
Ng has served in baseball dating back to the early 1990s. After working with the Chicago White Sox, she later joined the New York Yankees from 1998-2001. Serving as an assistant general manager, Ng presided over unbridled success in the Bronx in that time period. The Yankees went to the World Series in each of the four years and won it all three times. It came down to a bitter defeat in Game Seven of the 2001 World Series, of course. She later spent ten years with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization from 2002-2011.
The Marlins hired Ng in 2021. They made the postseason for the first time in a full season since 2003 this year. Miami made the MLB Postseason in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
The MLB world had much to say about the Marlins, Kim Ng, and the stunning announcement.
