On Sunday, the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers completed their three-game weekend series at Wrigley Field. Cubs infielder Michael Busch grabbed some headlines after he made a sparkling defensive play during the game.
Early on in the game, with the game scoreless in the second inning, Brewers infielder Oliver Dunn laid down a bunt. Busch, playing first base, hustled up to the ball as it rolled up the field. While Cubs pitcher Javier Assad ran to the ball too, Busch scooped it up and decided to do it all himself.
Busch retrieved the ball, lunged out, and tagged Dunn on the baseline before he made it to first!
Busch has had a strong season with the Cubs this year. Entering Sunday, Busch has hit .270/,328/.505 for an OPS of an impressive .833. He’s hit six home runs and has recorded an OPS+ thus far of 134. So he’s been a well-above-average hitter this year for the Cubs, who’ve benefitted greatly from that.
The Cubs currently lead the Brewers 5-0 as they look to take the series from the Brew Crew. A win would put them at 21-14 on the season and the Brewers at 20-13, even in the National League Central Division.
So Busch’s play could pay some serious dividends in the end. The MLB world took notice of Busch’s fantastic play on Sunday afternoon.
Yes it was.
