Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are off to an 0-4 start to the season. While some are pressing the panic button, some others think that’s the worst thing you could do right now.
On ESPN’s Around the Horn, writer David Dennis Jr. explained why people are doing a disservice to Clark and the Fever by acting like this 0-4 start is a “national nightmare.”
Dennis refused to pull punches either.
“The thing here for Caitlin Clark is it’s four games! You don’t become a No. 1 pick for a team that has two years straight of No. 1 picks without going to a bad team that has played the New York Liberty twice. Of course 0-4 is expected,” Dennis said. “They’ve got the Seattle Storm next. This team is not going to win a lot of games. That has never really been the metric for No. 1 draft picks. Most of the time they come to bad teams. They lose a lot of games.”
Dennis Jr. then compared Clark to San Antonio Spurs rookie star Victor Wembanyama, who lost 17 games in a row with the team in his first year. But there wasn’t any national discussion on that.
“What is most harmful to Caitlin Clark is the way that so many people are babying her and acting like this is some national nightmare that she’s losing games,” Dennis said. He brought up that fans attacked Fever star Aliyah Boston and blamed her for losses.
That thought is starting to really gather more momentum around. So, hopefully, everybody calms down and gets back to square one.
