This one really came out of left field. Seemingly out of nowhere, Twitter has announced that Vine will no longer exist.
Twitter acquired Vine in October of 2012, and four years later, Twitter is shutting down the social media video app.
Since 2013, millions of people have turned to Vine to laugh at loops and see creativity unfold. Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app – Vine Press Release
The release goes into more detail about what will happen in the coming months to Vine’s users and platform. Nothing is happening to the app, the videos, or the website in its entirety today, and won’t for some time. While this is good news for Vine users, the website is still closer to extinction than its birth.
Vine announced in the released that for now everything on Vine will remain in the app and online, but users will be notified before changes are made to the app or website. Nothing was said about when that end date may be or what will happen to the videos and website after it shuts down.
While the end is near, even though no end date has even been mentioned, Twitter has already exploded with great moments on Vine. Here are a couple as well as people saying goodbye to the six-second video platform.
