If you go to a game where the home team gets blown out, you now might have a chance to get a 50 percent refund.
GameHedge.com launches on Friday. It’s a new type of ticket marketplace that will offer fans a 50 percent refund at Major League Baseball games if the home team loses by five or more runs. The website also plans to offer refunds for home-team blowouts in the three other major sports.
This offer, called the Good Game Guarantee, is expected to be in effect for one in every eight MLB games, according to website founder Warren Friss. Looking at Tuesday’s games across MLB, not one team in the league lost at home by more than five runs or more. However, it happened three times on Monday.
Friss has had this idea in the works for years and has finally put it together. He told USA Today about one encounter he had with a blowout this year.
“I went to the Mets and Nationals game this year with Matt Harvey and Stephen Strasburg, and the Mets were losing 9-1 in the third inning. You’re walking out of the stadium after spending big money, and all you hear is, “Thanks for coming. Drive safely. See you tomorrow.’ It just felt so empty.’’
When the site begins to sell tickets for the NBA and NFL, the refund will be given if a team loses by 15-plus points at home. Friss has yet to decide what the threshold will be for the NHL.
