Former NFL quarterback and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has ventured into a new sort of football. The three-time MVP is now a part-owner of the European football club Birmingham.
In an Amazon Prime documentary about the club, Brady admitted that he was “a little worried about our head coach’s [legendary footballer Wayne Rooney’s] work ethic.”
Rooney was eventually fired in January of 2024 after failing to meet expectations, but now, he’s responding to Brady’s comment.
“I think it was a very unfair comment. When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess, really,” Rooney said, according to Sky Sports.
“The players weren’t really the players who could take the club forward. I think Tom came in once, the day before a game, where the day is a bit lighter, and I don’t think he really understood football that well at the time. Maybe he does now…
“What he does understand is he’s a hard worker. That’s why I’m really disappointed with the comment. Football is not NFL, NFL works for three months of the year, players do need rest as well, so I think he was very unfair.”
Fans reacted to Rooney’s response on social media.
“They weren’t in a mess, they were 6th in the league. Under Rooney they dropped 14 places in 15 games. There has been no one else in EFL history who has achieved as bad a record as that,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Rooney is one of the greatest footballers we’ve ever produced, I’ll take his word over an egg chases,” someone else added.
“If he knew anything at all about football he’d know Wayne Rooney was 1 of the hardest working players that had ever played in the prem he never ever give up literally run through a brick wall for his team mates, stick to American football until you educate yourself,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Brady responds to Rooney’s comments.
