Last week, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati and CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez discussed the possibility of having a combined playoff between the Copa America Centenario winner (Chile) and the Euro 2016 winner. Now it appears that is all but official.
Dominguez tweeted Wednesday that CONMEBOL is discussing possible dates with UEFA to have a playoff between the two champions. It was said last week that the playoff would either have to be a home and away series in both participatory nations or a one-game playoff in the New York City area most likely.
If both sides can get a date set, it’ll a no brainer to have something like this. Whether it’s two-games or one in the United States, the marketing writes for itself and should be able to sell out any stadium they want even though it’ll be a glorified friendly. And a full stadium, with advertising and a TV deal, when added with a catchy name and a trophy should make everyone some money.
Similar to the English Community Shield between the EPL and FA Cup winners or the UEFA Super Cup between the Champions League and Europa League winners, this would follow along that path and serve as a bit of a preview for the upcoming Confederations Cup next summer. While it’s not official yet, it seems as though all sides are for it so it’s only a matter of time before we’ll see Chile vs. the Euro 2016 winner at some point in the next year.
