Major League Soccer may not be among the highest level of soccer in the world, but that doesn’t mean the league can’t provide some absolutely electric and incredible moments, just like the Columbus Crew had against Charlotte FC on Wednesday night.
During Wednesday night’s MLS match between the two teams, Charlotte tried to take advantage of an out-of-position keeper with a long shot from just past midfield. Despite the bold and optimistic shot, Columbus keeper Eloy Room was still able to make the save with ease.
Following the save, Columbus ultimately cleared the ball to midfield, where a Charlotte foul gave Columbus a free kick just barely on the Charlotte end. The free kick was not in a particularly threatening position, but Columbus midfielder Lucas Zelarayán noticed Kristijan Kahlina was a little too far out, and he decided to have a go at the goal.
In a shocking moment, the ball sailed right over Kahlina’s head and into the back of the net to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.
“Even in MLS I’ve never seen a sequence like this before,” Matthew Doyle said in a Tweet sharing the video.
It was quite a wild sequence leading to a totally unpredictable goal, and the sports world had plenty to say about the crazy moment.
Ultimately, the match ended in a 2-2 draw. But this moment was undoubtedly the most exciting moment of the entire contest.
