It was a highly entertaining World Cup match between Ghana and South Korea but the game ended under controversial circumstances.
With South Korea down 3-2, English referee Anthony Taylor blew for full-time in the 101st minute right when South Korea won a corner kick. Typically, the referee lets the team take the set piece but Taylor didn’t do that. That infuriated the South Korean team as well as manager Paulo Bento, who got a red card for going after Taylor like a baseball manager going after an umpire.
This somewhat tarnished a great game as Ghana and South Korea continued a goalscoring spree that resulted in 11 goals scored in the first two matches on Monday. Ghana went out to a 2-0 lead by halftime and really dominated the first half, but South Korea came back after the break to score twice in three minutes thanks to Cho Gue-sung. Both goals were based on crosses and headers as that was South Korea’s main point of attack.
That South Korea comeback was short lived as Ghana took the lead again seven minutes later. Mohammed Kudus continued his goalscoring form and put Ghana in a 3-2 lead and kept them in front, even though South Korea did all they could to equalize for a second time.
Who knows if anything would’ve changed had South Korea gotten that final corner. More than likely it wouldn’t have, but you never know. Many went after Taylor, who has a history of making controversial calls in big moments as one of the more well-known referees in England’s Premier League.
