United States Women’s National Team co-captain Alex Morgan was “devastated” when she reflected on what could be her final go-round with U.S. Soccer. Speaking with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft following a premature exit from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Morgan fought off tears, as she described Sunday’s loss to Sweden as feeling like a “bad dream.”
“I don’t know,” Morgan said via Fox Sports. “The team put everything out there tonight. I feel like we dominated, but it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, we’re going home. It’s the highs and lows of the sport of soccer. So yeah, it just doesn’t feel great.”
Morgan, who made her first national team appearance with the U.S. in 2011, has played in a total of four FIFA Women’s World Cups. The 34-year-old forward was asked by Taft where she goes from here and what the future holds for her career with the national team. It’s a reasonable question considering Morgan will be 38 years old when the 2027 Women’s World Cup rolls around.
“I don’t know. I was so focused on the World Cup that…I don’t know, I’m just ready to get back to San Diego, get back to work and go from there,” Morgan told Taft.
Though, Morgan did tell ESPN that she isn’t planning to “hang up her boots” anytime soon and is taking it one day at a time.
Morgan certainly sounds like a player that hasn’t made up her mind just yet. And it’s understandable considering you don’t want to make any decision based on emotion, especially coming off a heartbreaking loss. At the same time, Though, Morgan did tell ESPN that she isn’t planning to “hang up her boots” anytime soon and is taking it one day at a time.
So, it would be a bit surprising if this was the last we saw from her in a USWNT uniform.
