Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver Katherine Legge (44) and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing driver Stefan Wilson (24) crash in the first turn Monday, May 22, 2023, during practice ahead of the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

IndyCar driver Stefan Wilson was hospitalized following a Turn 1 crash during an Indy 500 practice session.

According to NBCSports.com, “In the first crash on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month in preparation for the 107th Indy 500, Stefan Wilson was placed on a stretcher and transported to the hospital after colliding with Katherine Legge in Turn 1 during practice Monday.”

NBC Sports provided a video of the crash on their website.

“The crash occurred around 2:10 p.m. ET with 50 minutes remaining in the two-hour session when Legge ran into the back of Wilson just above the white line on the entry to the corner as they approached a line of cars,” NBCSports.com wrote. Once they both made contact, both were shot up along the wall. Legge made it through safely, but Wilson, however, unfortunately, needed assistance following the crash.

On the scene, doctors and aides placed Wilson on a stretcher and then brought him to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. According to the report, though, he is in “good spirits,” says Dr. Julia Vaizer. Vaizer is the director of medical services for the NTT IndyCar Series. She commented, saying, “I can tell you he’s doing well. He’s being transported to local hospital for advanced imaging and further evaluation, but he’s in good spirits.”

Legge also said that she was fine following the incident. The report said that she underwent evaluation at IU Health Infield Medical Hospital.
