Ryan Reynolds wants a Wolverine/Deadpool team-up movie and wants the Internet to help.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Deadpool star admitted he wants to convince Hugh Jackman to rethink his Wolverine retirement so the duo can make a kickass Wolverine/Deadpool film.
“I want Deapdool and Wolverine in a movie together,” says Reynolds. “What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh. If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”
Adds Reynolds, “Hugh Jackman is one of the best human beings. Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool/Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire but I genuinely love the guy.”
This sounds great in theory. Jackman and Reynolds are both megastars and play Marvel’s (Fox) most popular characters. Considering how much he made fun of Jackman in Deadpool, seeing the two face-to-face could be hilarious.
But, as much as the inner-fanboy in me wants the team-up, it’s probably a bad idea. Have we already forgotten Deadpool and Wolverine teamed up in the terrible X-Men Origins: Wolverine? (We’ve all at least tried to, anyway.) Yes, that was an entirely different version of Deadpool, but personally, I think the Jackman references in the updated Deadpool are plenty. Those
More importantly, bringing Jackman back would be a wet blanket on his stated final X-Men role in the upcoming Logan. Throwing the potential poignancy of that film away so Jackman can goof with Deadpool might not be worth it. Jackman’s done the role justice in so many films, it’s time to move on. But at the same time, it’s hard to imagine another actor doing the role justice, in the near-term.
So are there other options? Maybe a Deadpool/X-23/Negasonic Teenage Warhead movie? I’d be down.
But, for Jackman’s Wolverine and Reynolds’s Deadpool, it feels like the right moment has passed.
