Home Alone is a holiday classic while at the same time, probably freaked out little kids about what could happen to them if they’re left alone.
Anyway, if you have never seen the movie, you better do it now because I’m telling you what happens. Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is forgotten by his parents after the family leave for a Christmas vacation in Paris. While alone, two burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) try to rob the house thinking nobody is home. Kevin then places elaborate booby traps to foil the robbers.
The movie ends with the burglars being taken away by police and Kevin reunited with his family on Christmas. Seriously, did you actually think the burglars would be successful? But the movie just ends with Harry and Marv being taken away. Did they have a trial? Did they go to jail? Did Kevin have to testify at the aforementioned trial and reveal to his family what happened? We’ll never know, but a law student who is studying for his bar exam has compiled the list of charges Harry and Marv would be facing.
The charges are rather obvious as Harry and Marv would be charged with burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. They would also be charged with attempted voluntary manslaughter for trying to kill Kevin. Some light Googling would indicate that the guys could see over 30 years in prison if convicted. Kevin himself could possibly be charged with a list of crimes including assault and battery but because he has a right to reasonably defend his property and that he’s 10 years old, he’s probably not going to face charges.
What was not listed was what I would imagine would be child neglect charges to Kevin’s parents who left him alone to go on a long vacation. Sure, they didn’t mean to leave Kevin alone but that doesn’t really hold up in a court of law.
Either Kevin didn’t testify or charges were dropped or something because Harry and Marv were back to robbery two years later and somehow reconnected with Kevin in New York City. Guess that’s Hollywood for you.
EDIT: It was pointed out that Harry and Marv escaped prison in between both movies which makes a lot more sense. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go watch Home Alone because it’s clearly been way too long since I sat down to watch them.
