The NBA season may be drawing to a close in the next few nights with the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers wrapping up the NBA Finals, but there is one more source of basketball entertainment you will want to be paying attention to, with Aubrey Plaza of “Parks and Recreation” fame helping to lead the way.
Plaza and the Pistol Shrimps (already one of the coolest nicknames out there in the sports world, perhaps) are a part of a women’s basketball rec league that is focused on having fun without necessarily being on top of the skills on the court. That is not to say there are not some skilled ballers in this league, because my goodness there is some skill…
The rosters in the rec league are made up of mostly actors, models, writers and more from the Hollywood world. That alone makes this one of the more interesting leagues in the basketball world, but a documentary due to release aims to show just how much this league looks to put on a show for spectators around the sport by making people laugh and just have a good time. In a sense, many of the acts appear to be taking some pages from the Harlem Globetrotters playbook when it comes to mixing comedy and performance and maybe not the show of pure basketball skills.

The Pistol Shrimps were previously profiled by GQ, but this documentary should help bring the Pistol Shrimps some more notoriety soon enough.
