U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe and basketball star Sue Bird have thrown their support behind Kamala Harris for president.
Both athletes were recently on a call with other white women to raise money for the presumptive Democratic nominee. The fundraiser raised nearly 1.8 million dollars.
Just days earlier, Black women held their own fundraiser for Harris that attracted 40,000 attendees.
Rapinoe was one of the speakers at the event and explained why it is important for women like herself to follow the lead of African-American women during this time.
“Black women have done an incredible job, let us take our cues from them,” she said. “White women this is our opportunity to show up not only for ourselves but for black women. So, let’s just follow their lead.”

She showed mad love to Kamala Harris during her *first* run for president.
This is beautiful & we gotta keep it up.

Other celebrities on that call included actress Connie Britton, known for roles on the ABC hit show Nashville and singer Pink who joined the call while she was overseas during her concert.
Britton echoed Rapinoe’s sentiments about showing support for Harris.
“I’m so proud of all of us to be together, and as white women, we are the ones that have the privilege,” Britton said. “We, too have to fight and continue to fight for equality, our selfhood, [and] our freedom.”
The previous fundraisers by Black women and Black men clearly had an impact on Thursday night’s event.
