Former president Donald Trump has decided not to campaign with Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker in the final days of Georgia’s runoff election.

Walker’s campaign has faced a conundrum of how to handle Trump, who recently declared he would seek re-election as president in 2024. Walker asked Trump to avoid Georgia in the final days before the Nov. 8th midterm election. That’s apparently no different in the runoff cycle, either.

“Thank God,” one Walker campaign aide texted The Atlanta Constitutional Journal.

By contrast, Walker’s campaign has welcomed the help of popular Republican governors like Brian Kemp of Georgia and Ron DeSantis of Florida, both of whom won sweeping re-election this month. Former president Barack Obama has also entered the race, deigning to endorse Senator Raphael Warnock.

Walker faces Warnock in the most bruising election of the 2022 midterm cycle. Warnock currently leads in the polls by four points and enjoys three times the amount of campaign cash on hand as Walker. The former Georgia Bulldogs football star is currently facing a tax scandal in which he claimed a $1,5000 tax credit on his $3 million home in Dallas, Texas, that was only intended for Texas residents.

Georgia voters head to the polls to finally decide the election on Dec. 8th. Democrats have already retained control of the Senate in 2023.
