There were several big names who threw their support behind Herschel Walker throughout his Georgia Senate campaign but one name that shocked many in the sports world on Tuesday was former Heisman Trophy quarterback Doug Flutie.
The two former Heisman winners were teammates on USFL’s New Jersey Generals in the 1980s, a team that was owned by former President Donald Trump.
Trump, along with the league, sued the NFL in a class action lawsuit which they won, but the payout was only $3.76. The spring league shortly folded. Many blamed Trump’s greediness as to why the league folded the first time because he wanted his team to be part of the NFL.
Flutie and Walker ended up in the NFL where they both had long careers. Still, people across the country were shocked that Flutie would associate his name and brand with someone like Walker, and apparently, only a few knew their history.
Flutie was on the stage Tuesday night when Walker gave his concession speech, introducing the failed Senate candidate.
“I’m so proud of him, we’re all so proud of him for all he’s gone through and what he’s done,” Flutie said of Walker, who he called his ‘brother for life.’ “He gave it everything he had from day one, and he did it all for the right reasons. He cares about this state, and he cares about this country.”
Many sports fans and media members expressed their disappointment in seeing the former Buffalo Bills star stumping for Walker.
