As Seattle preps for a potential expansion NHL franchise, many things are taking shape to make sure that when the announcement happens, they’ll be prepared to hit the ground running. That means an arena to be able to play in as well as the team colors and name.

According to Greg Wyshynski of ESPN, that team name may have been revealed in one of the most inauspicious of ways. Speaking about a high speed rail that would connect Seattle and Vancouver, Washington governor Jay Inslee may or may not have revealed the name of the proposed NHL team.

“We cannot wait to get on a high-speed rail line to come up and have the greatest hockey rivalry in North America, which is the Seattle Totems versus the Vancouver Canucks.”

The Totems…?

Well that’s certainly a name. And there is some history behind using the Totems name as it was the name of Seattle’s WHL and CHL teams throughout the 60s and 70s but that historical significance could only go so far for a rather terrible team name.

It should be said that this isn’t the confirmed team name and it very well could just be the name the governor preferred or the team he knew from years past but Wyshynski noted that Totems is one of 13 names who have had their domain names registered for the team so it’s certainly an option. And if this list is any indication, Totems was an odds on favorite even before the slip up.

Though if we’re being honest, after seeing the 13 potential names, the Seattle Kraken would sound so great.
