Fans were asked to leave a hockey arena in the UK due to a “major medical emergency” Saturday evening after former NHL player Adam Johnson suffered a horrific injury.

Johnson suffered a cut to his throat, according to reports.

[Update: Johnson has since passed away.]

According to The Sun, there was a collision between Johnson and another player leading to “quite a lot of blood.” Witnesses among the estimated 8,000 fans said players formed a human ring around the incident to shield the view from onlookers.

Shields were eventually placed around the two for medical staff and Johnson to have privacy at Utilita Arena Sheffield.

Rescue workers reportedly administered CPR to Johnson. A critical care paramedic accompanied an ambulance to the scene.

Johnson, who played two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins (13 games), was rushed to the hospital after sustaining his injuries.

The 29-year-old player began his career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2018-19 in the American Hockey League, where he scored 31 points in the regular season.

Johnson is also a former forward at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The school sent out best wishes to their former star.

The Nottingham Panthers are a British professional ice hockey club and are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League.
