This season, Zach Wilson was thrust into the New York Jets starting lineup once again after future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the first game of the season. But with Wilson underperforming, it sounds like his time with the team is coming to an end.
Zach Wilson will not start this week’s game against the New England Patriots as he remains in concussion protocol for the team, which means that his time with the team is likely over – at least that’s what they led him to believe earlier in the season.
This week, NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the Jets had previously decided to move on from Wilson after benching him this season, before shockingly re-inserting him back into the starting lineup.
“Zach Wilson’s time with the Jets is expected to be over because the Jets told him they had plans to trade him this off-season when he was benched, per sources. This is part of the reason he was reluctant to go back to starting weeks ago. We’ll see how it all plays out,” Russini said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
Obviously, it’s a pretty insane move to tell a quarterback that he’s not going to be a part of your team in the future and then ask him to be your starting quarterback again, and the NFL world had a lot to say about it on social media.
Hold on. The Jets told Wilson they were going to trade him, and still tried to put him out there in meaningless games? This franchise is such a disaster. https://t.co/HHFVDJAoBY

This is what was reported by that Utah-based newspaper a while back.
Always seemed plausible at the time. This essentially confirms it.
Wilson’s hesitation to play again is definitely a lot more understandable with this knowledge IMO. https://t.co/gAvDfbI7BF

Why would they tell him this, and especially during the season? Every single time I think this staff couldn't be more incompetent, they prove me wrong.
Every single time. https://t.co/PbxljcfOZT

Telling him you’re gonna trade him and then two weeks later wanting him to start again is just so unbelievable. This organization does nothing right. https://t.co/64pnWPKbjE

1. Told him they were gonna trade him 2. Then played him again in 2 games. This organization is so backwards. Why not just tell him in the off-season……… https://t.co/USWUT3dloy

Wilson was expected to be the Jets’ backup this season where he learned behind Rodgers, but that ultimately didn’t happen and it looks like his career is taking a twist as a result.
