Former NFL coach Wade Phillips spoke out recently about why he thinks he’s become an ‘outcast’ in the NFL coaching world.
Phillips told the New York Post that he believes age is the reason why he’s not a coach anywhere right now.
“I hate to say it but I think it’s age,” Phillips told The Post. “It’s hard to beat my record as a coordinator so there’s got to be another reason. But that’s ok. I’m glad to be doing what I’m doing.”
Phillips, 75, coached professionally from 1976-2019 in the NFL. He did so with varying degrees of success, with much of his prominence coming from the defensive side of the ball.
He helped architect a dazzling gameplan that buckled former Carolina Panthers superstar quarterback Cam Newton in Super Bowl 50 while he was a member of the Denver Broncos staff.
His defenses always typically did very well, no matter where he was. He excelled in Atlanta and in Dallas in the 2000s, and helped shape future Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware. he was ultimately out of the league after the conclusion of the 2019 season. He last coordinated for the LA Rams, who made the Super Bowl in his three-year tenure with the team. He now coaches for the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks. he’s also the team’s general manager.
