Sorry, New York Jets fans, but it appears Kirk Cousins will not be coming to save your season.
The veteran quarterback, who has seen trade rumors involving his name grow as the Minnesota Vikings record has headed south, is reportedly staying put in Minnesota this season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday that Cousins “will not look to waive the no-trade clause in his contract — short of changing unforeseen circumstances.”
That “short of changing unforeseen circumstances” bit seems to be open to interpretation. What if the 1-4 Vikings somehow fall to 1-6 or 2-7 where a playoff run is all but impossible? Would he be open to a trade then?
But taking the report at face value, the 35-year-old quarterback will remain in the Twin Cities for the remainder of the season. After that, he’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, and the prolific passer is in line for a big payday with one of the NFL’s QB-needy teams.
Cousins is averaging 300 yards per game, with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. Yet the Vikings have been one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments this season, and some critics say that while Cousins consistently delivers big stats, he sometimes falls short in big moments.
NFL fans had mixed thoughts on the Cousins news, with many seizing on that “unforeseen circumstances” disclaimer.
He’ll cash in next offseason and get to pick his destination. Kirk doesn’t want to uproot his whole family just to be a 2+ month rental.
