There once was a time when the NFL had an extremely strict policy around marijuana use, resulting in many noteworthy suspensions to prominent players like former Miami Dolphins star running back Ricky Williams and former Cleveland Browns star receiver Josh Gordon. But as Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce recently revealed, those days are over.
After widespread legalization of recreational marijuana use throughout the country, the NFL adjusted its marijuana policy back in 2021. Now, players are only tested during a two-week period at the beginning of training camp making those tests extremely easy to pass, according to Travis Kelce.
“If you just stop in the middle of July, you’re fine,” Kelce said during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “A lot of guys stop a week before and they still pass because everybody’s working out in the heat and sweating their tail off. Nobody’s really getting hit for it anymore.”
Kelce went on to suggest that he believes between 50 and 80 percent of NFL players throughout the league are regularly using cannabis, which is certainly a change from just a few years ago.
It’s safe to say that things have changed in the NFL over the past few years.
