ESPN’s Diana Russini reports that edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney has finally picked his next team, and it’s the Tennessee Titans.
Russini reports on Saturday night that Clowney “has told Titans officials he plans to sign with them,” and he “texted with his new teammates his enthusiasm for joining the team.”
Earlier on Saturday, Russini said that Clowney is expected to sign with the Titans, noting that the New Orleans Saints also “made a very strong case” in their efforts to sign him.
Update: Jadeveon Clowney officially signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
And as Russini notes, Clowney reunites with Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, who worked on the Houston Texans’ defensive staff (including as defensive coordinator in 2017) for Clowney’s first three years in the NFL.
This is a huge boost to the Tennessee pass rush. Clowney — the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft — had only three sacks in 13 games with the Seattle Seahawks last season, but forced four fumbles, had an interception, and scored two touchdowns.
He totaled 18.5 sacks over the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Houston Texans, and the opposing team is always well aware of his presence- both with their preparation pregame, and in-game. Edge rushers like this are extremely valuable in a quarterback’s league.
Clowney is a terrific addition to a Titans team that went on a shocking run to the AFC Championship Game last season. And it continues an aggressive offseason for Tennessee that has included big new contracts for quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry.
