Before we close out a wild decade in America’s most popular sports league, we’re looking back at some of the best of the 2010s in the NFL.
Here’s a breakdown of the 10 worst professional football coaches from the last 10 seasons.
10. Freddie Kitchens, Cleveland Browns
I know it’s early, but Kitchens’ one season in Cleveland has been an utter mess. The team is undisciplined and comically mistake-prone, and has underperformed tremendously. The Browns are loaded with talent, but they’ll have a losing record in 2019.
9. Greg Schiano, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Schiano posted two losing campaigns with the Bucs, including a putrid 4-12 campaign in what was supposed to be an improved second season.
8. Todd Bowles, New York Jets
Bowles won five or fewer games in three consecutive seasons before the Jets finally cut bait at the conclusion of the 2018 campaign. It was a disaster.
7. Vance Joseph, Denver Broncos
The 2017 and 2018 Broncos were not low on talent, and yet Joseph won just 11 games in those two campaigns before John Elway gave him the boot.
6. Rob Chudzinski, Cleveland Browns
He was one-and-done with the 4-12 2013 Browns, and he never got another shot at a head-coaching gig.
5. Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams/New York Giants
Spags is lucky his 1-15 2009 season doesn’t count here, but a losing campaign in 2010 and a 2-14 2011 season still get him on to the list. He wasn’t cut out to be a head coach.
4. Matt Patricia, Detroit Lions
You can’t go 9-21-1 in two seasons with that much talent. It’s been a tumultuous two-year run for Patricia in Detroit, and you get the feeling he’s already lost a lot of that locker room.
3. Gus Bradley, Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars were no longer a slouch for much of the Bradley era, but he lost more than 10 games in each of his four abysmal seasons there. His career .226 winning percentage is the lowest of all-time among coaches with at least 60 games on their record.
2. Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns/Philadelphia Eagles/New York Giants
The current Giants coach went 9-23 in Cleveland and is 9-22 thus far in New York. He’s never won more than five games in four full seasons as a head coach.
1. Hue Jackson, Oakland Raiders/Cleveland Browns
Jackson has the lowest qualified winning percentage in NFL history, and all 44 of those losses came in a 56-game span this decade. At one point he won just one game in a full two-year span with the Browns.
