Browns running back Nick Chubb hurdles Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Syndication Akron Beacon Journal

The Pittsburgh Steelers stand at 1-2 and have been dealing with T.J. Watt’s absence on defense. They may have to deal with even more defensive issues now that they’ve announced that safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is in concussion protocol following their loss to the Cleveland Browns last week.

Head coach Mike Tomlin announced the move during his Tuesday press conference.

It’s a huge loss for the Steelers as Fitzpatrick has been putting up some very strong numbers and performances so far this season. The fifth-year player started the year with a pick-six in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. He then blocked an extra point that helped Pittsburgh win the game en route to being named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. In total, Fitzpatrick has 24 tackles, two pass breakups, and two interceptions.

He could still play on Sunday but the fifth-year player will have to go through a five-step protocol to be cleared to play. If he can’t go, it appears that defensive back Tre Norwood would step into his starting role.

We’ll get some updates on Fitzpatrick’s likelihood of playing as the week continues.
