The NFL seemingly has some fun with their “random” drug tests, often selecting players that just did something noteworthy for a test. The latest victim? Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell.
Boswell, in his second year out of Rice, tied a Steelers record with six field goals in the team’s 24-20 win over the Bengals on Sunday. Five of those six kicks came from beyond 40 yards, and apparently, that was enough to raise the NFL’s eyebrows and summon him for a “random” drug test.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, as I alluded to above. Colts punter Pat McAfee is the most notable player to bring “random” drug tests to light, as he was tested in August after a 65-yard punt in the preseason against the Bills, in April after making a joke on 4/20, and in October of 2013 after a crushing block.
Boswell’s teammate LeVeon Bell was also “randomly” tested by the NFL on 4/20, but given that Bell was eventually handed a suspension for skipping drug tests, maybe we shouldn’t damn the league too much for that one.
