Nick Mullens was an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of Southern Miss, and signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He’s been waived multiple times by the 49ers, and never played in an NFL game.
That is until Thursday night, when Mullens got the surprise start for San Francisco, with Jimmy Garoppolo done for the year with a torn ACL and C.J. Beathard dealing with a wrist injury.
And all Mullens did in his NFL debut was complete 16-of-22 passes, for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in the 49ers’ 34-3 victory. Granted, it came against Jon Gruden’s embarrassing Oakland Raiders team that has clearly given up.
Still, it was an extremely impressive game at the NFL level and on national television. Mullens did a fantastic job running Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and you would’ve never thought he was his NFL debut. He looked poised and in full control.
Mullens’ performance even opened the eyes of Twitter (like, the actual company)… so much so that he even got verified mid-game.
We’ll see if Mullens gets another start for San Francisco in Week 10. He’d have a great shot at starting a winning streak for the now 2-7 49ers, with San Francisco hosting the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
