Former Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders was thought by most pundits and fans to be a consensus top 10 pick in the NFL draft. However, Sanders underwent an unprecedented freefall all the way to the fifth round, where he was finally selected by the Cleveland Browns.
Shedeur Sanders opened his first training camp as one of four quarterbacks competing for the starting job. Unfortunately for Sanders, in the Browns’ first unofficial depth chart release, he was listed as fourth in line.
Still, due to injuries and rest, head coach Kevin Stefanski named Sanders the starter for the team’s first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. As great as an opportunity as it may be, Sanders is going to have to overcome another brutal break in order to be successful.
“Browns Stefanski says Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman won’t play Friday night,” reported Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot.
Another Cleveland area member of the sportsmediasphere, Mike Lucas, put into context just what that meant for Sanders in his pro debut.
“Shedeur’s 1st real NFL action will come against Carolina’s starting defense without his top two WRs.”
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“That’s how pre-season works, but his Cult will claim he’s somehow being treated unfairly,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Sounds like a great way to prove his worth. If he lights it up there’s no reason he shouldn’t be considered for at least 2nd on the depth chart,” one fan added.
“Just keeps getting more and more comical.. I’d request a damn trade if I was Sheuder, before Cleveland ends your career before it starts,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Sanders manages to overcome the odds.
