The Washington Commanders have an interesting dilemma ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
The quarterback for the team last year was fourth-year player Taylor Heinicke, who showed some flashes of good play, but ultimately hasn’t shown that he can lead the team to success. That leaves a number of different options on the table for the team if they believe he isn’t their guy long-term. They can either look to build through the NFL Draft in April or go out and get a veteran to try and compete now.
The Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers did the latter with great success in past years by bringing in Matthew Stafford and Tom Brady, respectively, resulting in Super Bowl wins for their franchises.
Given the recent success of teams with new veteran quarterbacks, it appears that head coach Ron Rivera is not ruling out that option this offseason.
“If you look at what’s happened the last couple of years, you would say, yeah, that’s the thing to do.” said Rivera in an interview with The Athletic.
Should they choose to go down this path, there could be a number of options available.
Jimmy Garropolo’s time with the San Francisco 49ers looks to be done, Aaron Rodgers could be requesting a trade from the Green Bay Packers, and Russell Wilson could ask to move on from the Seattle Seahawks.
There are obviously a lot of dominos to fall this offseason, but given the options the Commanders could have, it may be the exact right time to bring in a big-time veteran quarterback and try and compete in 2022.
