Eyebrows were raised around the league when news broke that the Detroit Lions’ proposal to rehaul the way teams are seeded in the playoffs actually came from the league offices rather than the Lions themselves.

Many wondered why the league offices would nudge the Lions to make the proposal, and now the answer has been revealed, according to Pro Football Talk, and the answer is none other than Roger Goodell.

“Per multiple sources, it became clear during last week’s league meetings that Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to eliminate the guaranteed home game for teams that win their divisions,” PFT reported.

Fans reacted to the shocking development on social media.

“We all know if Goodell wants it, itll likely pass! Is it me or has Goodell been amassing & consolidating power (like another ‘leader’?) ‘working’ the owners bc he talks to them,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Also, reseed the division round by record only. By that time it no longer matters whether a team is a DC or a WC. If #2 has an easier opponent than #1, then there is something wrong with your format (this goes for MLB & the NBA as well,” another fan added.

“A 12-13 win team should not be playing at a 7-8 win division winner in the playoffs. The division alignments are arbitrary and it’s the only league to punish you for not having a good season,” added someone else.

It’ll be interesting to find out what else Goodell is working on behind the scenes.
