NFL commissioner Roger Goodell probably shocked a few NFL fans this week when he suggested that the Super Bowl may be held overseas in the future.
Goodell is floating the idea of having London host a future Super Bowl.
“It is not impossible, and it is something that has been discussed before,” Goodell told a fan forum in London, via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.
The league has become hugely popular overseas, so much so that they decided to hold five games overseas this season but the idea of the Super Bowl being held overseas may not come off well with some American fans.
Goodell just said a few years ago the league has also kicked around the idea of having a franchise overseas as well, but it sounds like the NFL is definitely taking the idea of London hosting a Super Bowl seriously.
“I think being able to play it in one of our cities — it’s at a huge economic boost to those cities,” Goodell said. “Our fans live in those cities also. I think that is important. Not that we do not have great fans here [in London]; we do. So, as the international series develops, maybe that is a possibility as we play more games here.”
Sounds like the NFL has already made a decision on the matter.
