During Wednesday’s hearing before the U.S. House Committee on Oversight & Reform about the workplace conditions within the Washington Commanders organization, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was asked if he would ever consider taking action to remove Dan Synder as a majority owner of the franchise.
When pressed by Rep. Rashida Talib (D-MI) about whether or not he would consider removing Snyder as an NFL owner, given the myriad accusations against him by former employees and others, Goodell had a blunt response.
“I don’t have the authority to remove him,” Goodell said.
Now, while it’s true that Goodell doesn’t have the authority to just kick an NFL owner out, he does have the authority as commissioner to activate the voting process that could lead to Snyder getting booted from the league.
If Goodell were to recommend Snyder’s removal from the league to the Executive Committee, a three-fourths vote could force Synder to sell his ownership in the Commanders.
It’s hard to imagine that’s going to happen as Snyder has survived so many allegations and reports and investigations at this point, it seems as though he would literally have to kill someone in order to get removed from the league. Still, as the allegations continue to mount, especially those involving financial malfeasance that directly affect other NFL owners, it remains possible that Dan Snyder will be out of the NFL one day.
