The Los Angeles Rams pulled off a stunning comeback victory against the Las Vegas Raiders last week thanks to the late-game heroics of Baker Mayfield, who joined the team just two days earlier. Now, Mayfield has officially been installed as the team’s starting quarterback.
“Rams’ HC Sean McVay told reporters that QB John Wolford has a neck injury expected to sideline him Monday night in Green Bay. This means the Rams’ starting QB vs. the Packers, to no one’s surprise, will be Baker Mayfield,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said.
It was a struggle for Mayfield and the Rams’ offense for most of the game last Thursday, but they turned things around in the fourth quarter thanks to a 17-play touchdown drive capped off by a rushing touchdown from Cam Akers. After getting a defensive stop, Mayfield capped a 98-yard drive with a beautiful game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Van Jefferson.
Mayfield had been cut by the Carolina Panthers just a few days before following a disappointing run with the team. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback appeared likely to spend the rest of the season as a backup somewhere. Now, he has the chance to be a starter for the rest of the year and prove that he deserves another shot somewhere next year.
