The Las Vegas Raiders made the surprising move earlier this offseason to acquire quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks. The move means a reunion between Smith and head coach Pete Carroll, who also coached Smith in Seattle.
It’s clear that Carroll and the Raiders are excited about the opportunity to see Smith take the field. The organization has committed to the veteran in a major way despite him having yet to take a snap for the team, according to one prominent NFL insider.
“Sources: The #Raiders and QB Geno Smith have agreed to terms on a new deal to better compensate him for his play after the blockbuster trade. Smith gets a 2-year extension,” reported NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Thursday.
Rapoport then followed up his initial report.
” It’s a 2-year, $85.5M max value extension with $66.5M guaranteed for Geno Smith.”
Fans reacted to the massive extension on social media.
“Well deserved honestly. Raiders could hit this draft out of the park and be a wild card team,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“The Raiders securing Geno Smith with a 2-year extension is a smart move, as it locks in a veteran QB who’s already familiar with Pete Carroll’s system. After a tough 2024 season for Las Vegas, this gives them much-needed stability at the position,” added someone else.
“The hefty guaranteed money suggests a lot of faith in him, but it could be a bit of a gamble for a player who’s had a mostly inconsistent career,” one fan added.
It’ll be interesting to see how the contract pans out for the Raiders.
