The Pittsburgh Steelers picked two quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft and on Tuesday they decided to cut one of them.
While the Steelers selected Kenny Pickett in the first round as their heir apparent now that Ben Roethlisberger has retired, they also selected South Dakota State’s Chris Oladokun in the seventh round. However, while Pickett appears to be making a play to start this season, the team cut Oladokun as they needed to trim their roster from 85 players to 80 on Tuesday.
The 241st pick in the draft, Oladokun threw for 3,164 yards, 25 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2021, while also rushing for 166 yards. He could have provided Pittsburgh with an interesting wildcat possibility or perhaps could have transitioned into a wide receiver or special teams role, but it appears that he’s the victim of a robust quarterback depth chart.
Oladokun was stuck behind Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph and it’s unlikely that the team is going to part ways with any of them for the time being, especially as they continue to figure out who the starter will be in Week 1.
It’s possible that Pittsburgh could sign the rookie to their practice squad as a way to keep him around while they sort out the rest of the quarterbacks. However, the roster move is leaving a bad taste in a lot of fans’ mouths given that it appears the Steelers “wasted” a draft pick on a player that was always unlikely to make the final roster.
