Injuries have piled up at the quarterback position for the New England Patriots and the team has reportedly made a move to bring in a veteran quarterback as insurance at the position moving forward.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Patriots are expected to sign Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad.
This comes after injuries to both starting quarterback Mac Jones in Week 3 and backup quarterback Brian Hoyer in Week 4.
Rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe came into Sunday’s game when Hoyer went down. He played admirably in his first taste of NFL action despite losing a close game to the Green Bay Packers.
Jones is likely to miss “multiple games” while dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and it remains to be seen whether or not Hoyer will clear the concussion protocol with the new changes to the concussion protocol potentially coming into play in Week 5.
As of right now, Zappe is the only healthy quarterback on the Patriots active roster.
New England will likely monitor Hoyer’s situation and potentially bring on Gilbert to their active roster if the veteran quarterback is not cleared to play. It remains to be seen whether Zappe or Garrett Gilbert would get the start for New England if both Jones and Hoyer are unable to go for New England in their upcoming matchup against the Detroit Lions.
Whoever will be under center will get a fantastic matchup, with the Lions’ defense allowing 35.3 points per game through four games.
