Saturday night’s preseason game between the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers came to abrupt halt early in the fourth quarter when Isaiah Bolden, New England’s rookie cornerback, suffered a serious injury.
With Green Bay in New England territory and trailing only 21-17 quarterback Sean Clifford completed a short pass to receiver Malik Heath. Bolden, who was defending Heath on the play, went in for a tackle.
He ended up taking a hit from teammate Calvin Munson, the linebacker who was charging Heath from the other side.
Bolden fell straight to the ground after the hit, which can be seen here. He was eventually taken off of the field in a stretcher.
The two teams agreed to suspend the game.
The decision to stop the game was praised by, among others, Heath, as well as Bolden’s teammates, Matthew Slater and Mac Jones.
The immediate news about Bolden was generally positive. Not long after the game was suspended, the Patriots tweeted that Bolden “had feeling in all his extremities, but has been taken to a local hospital for further tests and observation.”
The Patriots selected Bolden in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Jackson State.
