Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was clearly upset with the officials after an offsides penalty against receiver Kadarius Toney nullified a go-ahead touchdown.
Mahomes’ frustration did not subside after the game, even when talking with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
As Mahomes and Allen embraced, the Kansas City quarterback was heard telling his Buffalo counterpart that the penalty on Toney was “The wildest ******* call I’ve ever seen.”
As Mahomes walked away from Allen, he added that the call was “******* terrible.” The video was shared on Twitter/X by Thad Brown of Rochester’s CBS affiliate, WROC.
It briefly looked as though the Chiefs had taken a lead over the Bills with just over one minute remaining in the game. Mahomes hit Travis Kelce for a big gain. Kelce then ran toward the middle of the field and tossed the ball to Toney, who ran into the end zone for a touchdown. Allen even praised the call, calling it “the ballsiest play I’ve ever seen.”
But Kansas City’s joy was short-lived. The penalty was nullified due to a rare offensive offsides call against Toney. Mahomes threw three incomplete passes after, resulting in a turnover on downs, which allowed Buffalo to run out the clock.
And while Toney earned a lot of criticism for his mistake, Mahomes turned his ire to the officials. First, he had to be restrained by teammates and coaches while yelling at an official.
The penalty was not debatable. Toney was offsides. Mahomes later complained that normally teams are given a warning about offensive offsides before they are flagged.
NFL senior VP of officiating Walt Anderson and referee Carl Cheffers both defended the call, saying that Toney’s offsides was “egregious.”
