Despite suffering a high ankle sprain during Saturday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the division round, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes not only returned to the game but he’s expected to play this week, as well. It’s an incredible display of toughness, and even his offensive coordinator isn’t sure how he does it.
When asked how Patrick Mahomes was able to bounce back from such an injury that usually has a lengthy recovery time, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy had a pretty honest response.
“I have no idea, but I want whatever he’s taking,” Bieniemy said, according to Pro Football Talk.
If he had to guess, however, Bieniemy would say that it just comes down to Mahomes’ competitiveness.
“He’s just a competitive person, he’s a competitive player,” Bieniemy said. “It’s the intestinal fortitude that’s in him. He just refuses to accept that he’s not going to put himself out there to be with his teammates. You love that about him. Last week was a unique situation and difficult in a lot of ways because obviously you always want to make sure that the player is OK, but more importantly, you also know that he can give you the best chance of winning.”
We’ll see just how limited Mahomes is when he steps out on the field this weekend.
