The Carolina Panthers had arguably the NFL’s most unsettled quarterback situation in 2022, starting three different signal callers.
Now, it’s up to Josh McCown to help fix the situation.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday the Panthers have hired McCown as their QB coach.
The 43-year-old McCown was the epitome of a journeyman quarterback in the NFL, playing for 12 different teams during an 18-season career. That included a two-year stint in Charlotte in 2008-2009. He finished his career with 17,781 yards, 98 touchdowns and 82 interceptions.
Since his retirement in 2020, McCown has looked to break into the NFL coaching ranks, and even interviewed not once, but twice for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching spot, in 2021 and again in 2022.
Now, McCown will get to train under new Panthers head coach Frank Reich, himself a former NFL quarterback.
The Panthers face an uncertain situation at QB in 2023. Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker, who both started games in 2022, are free agents, with Darnold unrestricted. That leaves only two quarterbacks on the roster. Matt Corrall, the team’s third-round pick in 2022, missed all of last season with an injury but is in the mix. The team also signed free agent Jacob Eason to their practice squad in late January.
Carolina, which has the ninth pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, is widely expected to select a quarterback.
The NFL world seemed to like McCown’s hire.
